The Ouray Victorian Inn was built in 1987 on the site of the Rice Lumber yard after the former business closed, quickly becoming among the finest Ouray Colorado hotels. Designed to compliment the town’s historic Victorian era look, the property was awarded a Historical Society Architectural Award for design excellence in a new commercial building. There are many photographs of old Ouray, CO scattered about the hotel that give you a sense of what Ouray was like in times past. Gary and Debbie Wild purchased the property and the Ouray Victorian Inn in 1991. At the time most of the local Ouray Colorado hotels were open only in summer, the busiest part of the year. However Gary, an avid ice climber, wanted to remain open for the winter in order to promote his pastime. Together with their son-in-law Bill Whitt, the Wilds created a winter season in Ouray by spearheading the development of the Ouray Ice Park and facilitating the Telluride Discount Ski Program. The Victorian, or “Vic”, became the place to be during the ice season. Today the Ice Park is an internationally known ice climbing venue that attracts enthusiasts from all over the world and the inn is still as popular as ever with climbers.
The inn was again sold in December 2008, this time to Jan and Brian Lisk, the current owners. Moving from Chicago, they brought along their two sons, Jeff and Max, as well as Junior the Cat. Roscoe, the PHD (Perfect Hotel Dog) and official guest greeter, and Bandit the Black Cat were added to the family after arriving in Ouray, CO. The family expanded several times with the addition of daughter-in-lay Jessica and grandson Aiden.
Since 2009, the hotel has been extensively renovated. Each room has been redecorated, the bath areas updated and the bedding upgraded with luxury linens and towels, duvets and covers, and new pillows. Organic soaps, lotions and shampoo have been introduced as well. In addition, air conditioning has been installed along with complimentary WiFi access and television service, and all rooms now feature a flatscreen TV. New landscaping, paint and patio furniture was added in the common areas along with a brand-new river patio perfect for kicking back and relaxing. Last but not least, the breakfast room received a complete and charming overhaul, making ‘the Vic’ a premier Ouray Colorado hotel.
