Ouray Winter Vacations
Wintery thoughts are in order today. As we watched the snow coming down at breakfast this morning, we all agreed that winter is the prettiest time of the year. We have several early season snow storms which have coated the high peaks with a lot of glorious white stuff that reflects both sun and shadows. It is a photographer’s paradise.
The conversation soon moved on to all the things you can do during this season. While ice climbing is the biggest winter thing around here, there are so many other things to do, both outdoors and indoors that attract visitors to the San Juan’s and Ouray.
Outdoors, we have fabulous snowshoeing and cross country skiing. One of the best places is Ironton, only 9 miles south of the Victorian Inn. The Nordic Trail group does a wonderful job of maintaining this area. Those looking for a moderate day of skiing or showshoeing can travel on over four miles of groomed trails that lead into the ghost town of Ironton where over 300 people once lived and worked the mines. For more of a back country ski day, follow the old mining roads that lead up to higher elevations and spectacular mountain views. Take a moment to imagine what it was like a hundred years ago when mines with name like Colorado Boy or Silver Belle were alive with miners bringing out millions of dollars of gold and silver.
Also outdoors, we have sledding in town (or down Campbird Road if no one is looking) and ice skating at Rotary Park. Even the Riverwalk puts on a new face in winter.
While the outdoors is a major reason to visit Ouray in winter, the cultural scene is just as much of an attraction. The Wright Opera House has a full season of movies, concerts and plays all winter. Upcoming performances through December include:
|Let the Fire Burn||Movies||Wednesday, November 20, 2013|
|The Oldest Profession by Paula Vogel||Theater||Friday, November 22, 2013|

Then of course, there is Yule Fest Victorian Christmas Holidays on December 13-14, 2013. This is a weekend full of festive activities, concerts, festivals, shopping and fun for the whole family. Search for the Ouray ornament in local shops and restaurants for a chance to win a $50 gift certificate for the Ouray business of your choice. Enjoy the holiday parade, get photos with Santa, enjoy a Christmas concert at the historic Wright Opera House. Events also include the annual Wine Chocolate and Cheese Fest on December 15.
Or join us for the last time in 2013 for a Ouray New Years eve and the midnight fireworks. The best seats in Ouray are right here just outside your room.
