Music in Ouray: Mountain Music Series
Music in Ouray: Mountain Music Series
Music in Ouray returns with the Mountain Air Music series, a free month long music festival. The series will feature incredible live music along with great food, non-alcoholic beverages, and beer, wine and spirits for purchase. Local non-profit organizations will benefit from beverage and food sales during the concerts. Each concert will be a multi-faceted family-friendly affair, with great kids’ entertainment to go along with the music. The festival is sponsored by the Ouray Hot Springs and other local businesses.
The second installment of the our Mountain Music series introduces Otis Taylor. Part of Taylor’s appeal is his contrasting character traits. But it is precisely this element of surprise that makes him one of the most compelling artists to emerge in recent years. In fact, Guitar Player magazine writes, “Otis Taylor is arguably the most relevant blues artist of our time.” Whether it’s his unique instrumentation (he fancies banjo and cello), or it’s the sudden sound of a female vocal, or a seemingly upbeat optimistic song takes a turn for the forlorn, what remains consistent is poignant storytelling based in truth and history.
Screen Door Porch opens the concert. The band’s energetic stage show thrives in a space that houses colorable harmonies, award-winning songwriting, and a diverse bag of acoustic and electric instrumentation. Screen Door Porch performs either as a quartet with 3-part harmony supported by acoustic/electric/slide guitars, banjo, mandolin, fretless bass, drums, Wyoming kazoogle, harmonica) or as a duo without drums/bass, add Samsonite suitcase kick drum.
The concerts will be held in Fellin Park next to the Ouray Hot Springs pool every Thursday in June.
The musical line up for this year’s season is dynamic and diverse. Concert attendees will be treated to four weeks of quality musicians from across the country and British Columbia. Music genres encompassed in this year’s series include roots, blues, indie rock, Americana, bluegrass, and much more, with many of the bands putting a modern spin on classic sounds. Ouray’s Fellin Park will be filled with the sounds of big brass, sweet harmonies, quirky melodies and danceable beats.

The March Fourth Marching Band will be opening the season on June 6. The band, M4 to its fans, is a kaleidoscope of musical and visual energy that inspires dancing in an atmosphere of celebration. Aside from their marching band themed costumes, as well as the 5-piece percussion corps and 7-part brass section, M4 is far from a “marching band” in any traditional sense (though this group of about 20 has been known to parade down Main Street before taking the stage). M4 is anchored by funky electric bass and has been evolving into a more guitar- and vocal-driven musical experience.
Opening for the March Fourth band is Miss Emily, a half classic soul and one half modern funk/pop diva sensation.
