Lake and river fishing is a popular activity for Ouray visitors. One of the best places for trout fishing is on the Uncompahgre River in nearby Ridgway State Park. The river has a variety of both stocked and wild trout. Browns, rainbows, and cutthroat are plentiful. Public access is excellent with walking trails and deep pools. Year-around fishing is possible.
The Cimarron River, San Miguel River and Gunnison River also provide excellent fishing opportunities. The Cimarron River is a summer only area, where wild rainbow and brown trout are usually available. The area below the Silver Jack reservoir is a good place to start.
The San Miguel river west of Ouray along Highway 162 is the region’s only free flowing river therefore fishing conditions vary depending on water conditions. Public access from the road is convenient.
The Gunnison River east of Montrose is a great place to fish in the late spring and early summer. It has some of the best fly fishing around.
There are many more remote sites where the fish are plentiful and the surroundings serene. These included Cow Creek, Dallas Creek and Canyon Creek. They may be hard to get to but the trout are worth the effort.
The Ridgway State Park also has a 1000 acre reservoir that provides great fishing in a beautiful setting. A full service marina and plenty of access points allow for excellent fishing and boating opportunities for the whole family. Blue Lake and East Dallas Lake are nearby summer-only fishing areas as well.
A license is required at all sites. Tackle and license information is available at several locations including: RIGS Fly Shop and Guide Service and the Ridgway State Park. If you are unfamiliar with the area, consider hiring a local guide for at least one day.
