Ouray in Spring: Activities

spring flowersOuray in Spring. The calm awakening of Spring attracts visitors looking for warm sunshine and snow capped mountains. The big-horned sheep and elk come down to graze along side the highway and eagles perch on nearby trees. The aspens and wildflowers are green and the town is coming alive; shops and restaurants are open but the streets remain uncrowded  Crews are clearing the lower jeep trails and the hiking trails are generally dry and passable.

This also is a great time of year to explore the many scenic and historic byways the criss-cross the San Juans.  Drive the Million Dollar highway, complete the San Juan Skyway loop or explore the roads along the Unaweep-Tebeguache Byway.

This is the best time of year for rafting and waterfall watching. The winter runoff from the mountains is at its peak so the rivers are running high and the falls in Box Canyon and at Cascade are gushing as well as the many unnamed falls in the back country. Fishing too is great.

Wildlife watching is at its best as well.  Elk and sheep come into town where they seem to pose for the photographers.  Eagles and migratory birds can be seen most times of the day.
