The Inn was built in 1987 on the site of the Rice Lumber yard, after the lumber yard was destroyed by fire. It was designed to compliment the historic Victorian architecture of Ouray, which dates back to the 1870′s. Shortly after its completion, the Inn was awarded a Historical Society Architectural Award for design excellence in a new commercial building. There are many photographs of old Ouray scattered about the property that give you a sense of what Ouray was like in times past.
In 1991, the Inn was purchased by Gary and Debbie Wild. At that time, most of the hotels in town were open only in summer, which is still the busiest part of the year. Gary, an avid ice climber wanted to stay open for the winter as well. So, the Wilds, together with their son-in-law Bill Whitt, created a winter season in Ouray by spearheading the development of the Ouray Ice Park and facilitating the Telluride discount Ski Program. The Victorian or “Vic” became the place to be during the Ice season. Today the Ice Park is an internationally known Ice climbing venue that attracts ice climbers from all over the world and the Victorian Inn is still the place to be during the Ice season.
